Carp can be found at all levels of the water, from the bottom to the surface. One of the most effective ways to attract carp to your rig on the bottom is by soaking your bait. This article explains exactly how to do that!
Water layers
There are different "layers" in the water. These are vertical zones with varying water temperatures. Just think: you dive deeper into the water, and the further you go, the colder it gets. Carp love warm water, so they spend much of the day far above the bottom. That's why you can easily spot carp at the surface or just below it during the warmer months.
Of course, you can also target the fish in these upper layers of the water, but there are quite a few challenges: weed, wind, and more. So, you really want to get the fish feeding on the bottom, since that's where your rig is. Soaks can lure the carp to the bottom!
Let's soak
"Soaks" is a collective term for all kinds of liquids you can pour over your boilies. These liquids can contain various attractants that attract carp. The appeal of a soak is that it dissolves quickly underwater and disperses the attractants throughout the water. This creates a trail of attraction underwater. These trails can spread both horizontally and vertically, depending on the ingredients.
So you can imagine that in deeper water (say, 3 meters or deeper), it can be incredibly effective to have attractors in your soak that spread vertically. This way, you can provide a feeding stimulus to the carp swimming well above your feeding area. A common ingredient that disperses vertically is oil. Think of fish oils, but also seed oils like hemp or sunflower.
My favorite way to soak
I am a big fan of treating my boilies in two ways for extra attraction: a combination of a Liquid soak and powder coating . This creates a situation where the powder particles are carried along with the rising soak, creating a super attractive cloud underwater.
The two products I prefer to use for this are our Krill Liquid combined with the Powder Coating . Both products are incredibly attractive on their own, but the combination is #GOLD. Our Powder Coating contains krill meal and PD fish meal. These provide an immediate feeding signal to the carp and float freely throughout all water layers.
How To - Soaking
- Throw 1 kilo of boilies into a bucket
- Spray about 50 millimeters of soak (liquid) over this
- Shake the boilies well in the buckets
- Sprinkle a few small scoops of Powder Coating over it
- Shake the bucket again to allow the 'powder particles' to disperse
- Repeat steps two through five until you see a nice layer on your boilies
By adding a little liquid and powder at a time, you create an attractive layer around your boilies that will spread throughout all the water layers. Especially in these warm months, this is sure to generate extra action!
Success!
