The fishing season has truly begun, which means it's time to get the rods out! To ensure quick success this spring, it's crucial to choose the right water and the right spot. Curious how? Then read on!
Which water do you have the best chance on?
Especially in early spring, the water temperature is still quite low. Carp are cold-blooded animals, meaning the water temperature has a major impact on their behavior. The warmer the water gets, the more active the fish become. So, if you want a quick chance of catching a carp in spring, it's best to choose shallower water. Sunlight has a greater influence here, causing the carp to become active sooner and move more, expending energy, and (not unimportantly): BAIT!
Sunlight is an important factor in spring that you as a fisherman must take into account.
Generally, carp begin to become active at a water temperature of 8 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, you can tempt them with a single-fished pop-up bait, for example, to pique their curiosity. At a water temperature of around 12 to 13 degrees Celsius, their food needs really increase, and the carp emerge from their winter mode. So remember, the fish won't immediately start feeding after an afternoon of sunshine!
A chod with a striking pop-up: the favourite spring weapon of many carp anglers!
All in all, small to medium-sized waters with a depth of 0.5 to 2 meters are ideal for carp fishing in the spring, where you can carefully start feeding depending on the water temperature.
Hotspots in spring
Hopefully, based on the tips above, you've found a nice spot to start your spring fishing. However, upon arrival, it can be quite difficult to determine exactly where to go. The fish are often still quite passive, so you, as a carp angler, have to actively search for them.
Actively hunting for fish works best in spring!
A good starting point is the bank where the sun shines most. Besides warmth, the sun's light also provides a stimulus that activates the fish. Furthermore, passive spring carp often love all kinds of obstacles, such as reeds, overhanging branches, broken trees, and so on. You can also consider the wind: is a cold northerly wind blowing across the water? Then take a look in a bay sheltered from the wind. Chances are the fish are enjoying the spring sunshine there and can be tempted into a bite with a single boilie !
A single boilie can be enough to force a bite in spring!
Don't just sit still in spring; keep moving. If a few hours of fishing in one spot doesn't yield anything, pack up your gear and try a different spot. Bonus tip: move with the sun so you're always fishing in a sunny area.
Good luck this spring!
