Mark Hofman explains: In the spring, I always choose flashy baits, and in many cases, I fish exclusively with pop-ups. Now that spawning is over on many waters, I'm switching to bait with good nutritional value: protein-rich pop-ups!
Battered and emaciated after the orgy
Spawning is an intensive and demanding period for carp. They emerge battered and emaciated. After a few days of rest, the carp need to replenish their energy reserves. This is why, for me, it's the signal to start my "boilie fishing."
While I hardly feed in the spring and mostly fish with single hookbaits, the bags of boilies come out of the garage again this spring. After all, we can start feeding again because the fish are hungry! I also find the coming period one of the most enjoyable, because the fish are much more relaxed than in spring, and with clever feeding, you can catch some great runs.
Bait choice is important here!
From lean to full
Basically, I always prefer a fishmeal boilie. This is because of the natural attraction it provides. Fishmeal is packed with amino acids and nucleotides. These are substances that carp recognize as food, because they are also released by crustaceans and other underwater creatures. The carp can sense these from great distances underwater and thus find their food efficiently.
While one attractive pop-up is enough for me in the spring, I now opt for a high-quality fishmeal boilie packed with attraction and nutrients.
Krill & Squid are favorite
Boilies made with krill and squid have always been my favorite. The flours made from these animals are attractive, nutritious, flavorful, and packed with amino acids.
These meals have also proven themselves in recent years and you can really get going with this type of fishmeal boilies.
Of course, it's self-serving, but our KWO Krill Special has everything I'm looking for in a high-quality fishmeal boilie:
- Maximum dosage of krill meal
- Optimal dosage of krill hydrolyzate
- PD fishmeal
- Squid meal
- Full of amino acids and nucleotides
- 23% of high-quality protein
Because the ingredients are already so naturally attractive, no additional flavoring is needed. This boilie is bursting with natural appeal. It's no wonder our team calls it the "high-catcher."
By the way, I'll be working more with our Squid Special in the coming weeks. Simply because I'm receiving so many positive reports of catches from our customers. That's inspired me to get back into it! Sometimes it's a bit of a choice between your own children... so tough ;-)
All out or moderate?
By the way, don't start dumping boilies; you can easily ruin a spot or water. See if you can get a few bites first, and then you can gradually increase the amount or frequency of feeding. The times feeding 5 or 10 kilos of boilies at once has really helped me can be counted on one hand.
A better tactic is to feed more regularly, with a kilo of boilies on two or three rods likely being enough to build up a swim. Be sensible and patient with feeding. Building a swim takes time, and I'm convinced that a handful of bait regularly is more effective than dumping 10 kilos at once.
Sure, if you get three or four runs in one night, you can feed more. Whether you'll actually catch more is the question... Those four carp can just as easily eat two or three kilos without you reaching more fish with more bait. Again, feed regularly so there's always something to be found on the spot!
Squid & Krill mix
I'm also a fan of mixing boilies. In my experience, it attracts more fish that way. We have a special offer in our shop specifically for this purpose. A great deal with a total of 10 kilos of boilies, which will keep you going during the upcoming warmer months. Check it out here!
Good luck everyone,
Mark
