Boilies come in different sizes, and choosing the right diameter is essential for attracting carp in the spring. Read on to find out why.
Small boilies
On waters with a lot of pressure, it can be effective to choose small boilies —12 millimeters or smaller. The smaller the bait, the faster a carp will accept it as food, and the sooner food competition will break out on your spot.
When food competition increases, fish try to outpace each other because they're afraid they won't get enough themselves. This causes them to feed more aggressively and therefore more carelessly. All these factors give us, the carp angler, a higher chance of catching fish. The only downside is that small bait is also more likely to be swallowed by whitefish.
Medium boilies
Trouble with whitefish when using small bait? Then choose boilies with a diameter of 14 to 16 millimeters. They're large enough to attract a carp, but not too large to scare them off. This diameter is best for waters with a moderate (carp) population.
Medium-sized boilies can also be used in various ways, such as a single boilie on a hair rig, as a snowman, or as bait at a feeding spot. The advantage of smaller diameters is that carp accept them more readily, thus increasing the chance of a bite in spring.
Large boilies
If you plan to fish on waters with (many) large carp, boilies with a diameter of 18 to 20 millimeters are best. Large boilies often attract carp accustomed to large baits. They stand out more among the natural food supply, and there's also less competition.
No big carp, but lots of whitefish? Then choose large boilies; whitefish simply have a harder time swallowing them. This way, you'll target carp much more effectively.
Taste and color
Besides the diameter of the boilies, it's also important to consider the flavor and color. In spring, sweet flavors, such as Scopex , are often popular with carp. These flavors can entice carp to eat your bait. As for color, bright colors like yellow, orange, or pink are preferred in spring because they stand out more in the water.
Finally, to maximize your catches, it's essential to present your bait correctly. Experiment with different presentations, such as using a snowman or presenting your boilies (scattered or compacted) on a feeding spot.
